Salta and Cafayate - Gems of Northern Argentina - History, culture, active adventure, food and wine
Salta, colonial grandeur and Provincial capitol
Without question, this is one of our favorite regions in Argentina, and still surprisingly overlooked by travelers, though that is beginning to change. Full of stunning architecture and surrounded by rugged natural landscapes-- mountains, vineyards and verdant valleys--the city features fine museums and art markets, historic churches, renowned regional cuisine (delicious locro, humita and empanadas are a must), delightful street-food vendors, charming restaurants, exclusive accommodations, and vibrant nightlife along Calle Balcarce. And just outside the city you can enjoy a variety of adventure activities - horseback ride with our gauchos, mountain biking and hiking, touring local farms, and exploring ancient native cultures. Our local hosts and concierges are waiting to welcome you, and show you their city from the ultimate insiders perspective. Hotels we love include: Legado Mitico, Villa Vicuna, Solar de la Plaza, The Sheraton, and just outside the city, the fabulous House of Jasmines. Let's Get Started on planning your trip! |
Cafayate Wine Country - A TLT Signature Destination
The thrilling drive from Salta to the wine-centric town of Cafayate is a must, a meandering journey through a magnificent mini-Grand Canyon (Quebrada de las Conch as/Gorge of Shells, within the Calchaquí Valley) filled with giant cactus and stunning red, purple and pastel cliffs etched by time. The drive takes a touch over three hours, but you'll want to stop along the way (or we can arrange a private driver and guide) to take photos and hike into places like the Anfiteatro, natures acoustically designed amphitheater, where you can listen to local musicians playing guitars and flutes. You can also take the long way, through Cachi (great lunch spot), and up to Colome, the world's highest vineyard. Ask us about our first journey here 20 years ago. It's more refined today, but still quite an adventure. And then you arrive in Cafayate, charming and tranquil, a colonial town centered around a picture perfect plaza adorned with artisan shops, food and vegetable markets and restaurants. The first thing you might want to do is select a seat at a sidewalk bar or cafe, relax and take in the setting with a glass of wine, or try an Argentine specialty; Fernet and coke on ice. Our local team of wine guides, concierges, hosts and gauchos will take care of your very wish. We customize all itineraries to match your desires, and use our 20+ years of on-site experience to set you up with unique wine, food, and adventure experiences only locals can provide. Accommodations we love include: Patios de Cafayate, Grace Cafayate Boutique Hotel and Spa, Wine Resort Vinas de Cafayate, Casa de Bodega El Porvenir de Cafatate, and Villa Vicuna Wine Hotel. And of course you have a number of world-class wineries, from Piatelli to San Pedro de Yachochuya, Etchart, El Porvenir, Michel Torino, and Susana Balboa, among others. El Calafate - A lively and artistic Patagonian town and gateway to the famed glaciers of Perito Moreno and beyond to the village of El Chaltén and Los Glaciares National Park. And for anglers, a trip to El Calafate can be combined with an unforgettable trip to Estancia Laguna Verde.

Think of the charm of Switzerland (Bariloche is a sister city to St. Moritz) in terms or the architecture plus mouthwatering chocolate shops on almost every corner. Fine restaurants serving Patagonian lamb and traditional "asados", artisan markets, fine silversmiths and leather-crafters, and a welcoming people that make you feel right at home. And if you take an enchanting drive around the lake, in about an hour you can end up in Villa La Angostura, a town as idyllically romantic and charming as you could ever imagine.
