A Rare View of Iceland’s Remotest Ports

Catch coastal vignettes and meet local creatives in the Arctic Circle. Our trek to the official Arctic Circle marker on Iceland’s tiny Grímsey Island began uneventfully. But then, midway through, I looked up from the trail to find myself surrounded by grazing sheep, hundreds of flying Atlantic puffins, dramatic cliffs, and the sparkling ocean – all in one frame-worthy moment. A few minutes later, three Icelandic horses appeared in the distance, their emo bangs flopping in the chilly wind. Iceland, I quickly realized, is always putting on a show.

FAQ: Traveling in Iceland - Iceland may be a small island, but its dramatic landscapes and diverse regions can feel worlds apart. Travelers often ask how best to explore multiple destinations, what’s realistic in one trip, and when to go. Here are answers to the most common questions.

Q: Is it easy to visit multiple destinations in Iceland on one trip?
A: Absolutely. Iceland is compact yet diverse, and its well-maintained ring road and regional airports make it surprisingly easy to explore more than one region in a single journey. In just 7–10 days, you can combine Reykjavik with the Golden Circle, the South Coast, and the Highlands. With 12–14 days, it’s realistic to add the north, east, or even remote Westfjords. We can arrange domestic flights, private drivers, guides, or self-drive itineraries with luxury accommodations along the way, making each transition seamless.
Q: Do I need to fly between regions, or can I drive?
A: Both options are available. Many travelers enjoy self-driving or using a private driver along the ring road for a flexible and scenic journey. For those short on time, domestic flights quickly connect Reykjavik with Akureyri in the north or Egilsstaðir in the east, allowing more time to enjoy the landscapes and experiences rather than hours on the road.
Q: What is the best time of year to combine fishing with other Icelandic adventures?
A: Prime fishing season runs from late May through September, which also aligns with Iceland’s summer highlights: long days, lush landscapes, and accessible highland roads. This makes it ideal to combine fly fishing with adventures like glacier hiking, horseback riding, or visiting volcanoes. In winter, fishing is limited, but the Northern Lights, heli-skiing, and snow adventures make for an unforgettable alternative. And insider tip: In April and early May you can combine heli-skiing with fly fishing for sea-run brown trout.
Q: Can you customize an itinerary that blends culture, fishing, and outdoor adventure?
A: Yes, that is our specialty. We design each itinerary around your interests — perhaps beginning with a few days in Reykjavik for dining and cultural exploration, then moving on to exclusive fishing lodges, and ending with a stay at the Blue Lagoon’s Retreat or Deplar Farm for spa and adventure. Every trip is tailored to create a seamless flow from one region to another.
Q: How much time should I plan for a multi-destination trip?
A: For a balanced experience, we recommend a minimum of 7 nights. A 10- to 12-night trip allows time to enjoy multiple regions without feeling rushed. With two weeks, you can comfortably include the Highlands, South Coast, north, and even the Westfjords for a truly comprehensive adventure.
